AIFF files are the most general since they come in a range of sound qualities, sample rates, channels, and precision. As a consequence, it's also hard to find a general player for this format:
1-channel, 8-bit integer, 8.013 kHz, AIFF sound test (22k bytes)
1-channel, 16-bit integer, big endian, 8.013 kHz, AIFF sound test (45k bytes)
2-channel, 16-bit integer, big endian, 16.000 kHz, AIFF sound test (180k bytes)
2-channel, 16-bit integer, big endian, 44.1 kHz, AIFC sound test (380k bytes)
If your computer plays static then your viewer or your system audio
control may not have the
correct playback rate set (and doesn't know how to change the playback rate)
or doesn't support this format.
The below viewers are NOT guaranteed to play all of the above sound formats.
If you can not play any of these then you may want to install a player:
audio/x-aiff; sfplay %swhere sfplay is the AIFF audio player. For Sun systems, you can use xplay.
For Solaris users, this tip comes from Nigel Badnell:
When using xplay with Solaris, users will need a little more detail in their mailcap file:
audio/x-wav; xplay -; stream-buffer-size=8000 %s
To set up the AIFF player, enter the following into the HelperApplication or
ExternalViewer dialog box in your Web Browser:
| MIME type / subtype | audio/x-aiff |
|---|---|
| extensions | aiff,aif,aifc |
| application | wham |
where wham is one of many AIFF sound players. You may quickly get a copy of wham133.zip for Windows. Note that this copy may not be as recent as the previous reference however.
Note that you may need to supply the complete path to the application.
Also, some browsers need a '.' preceeding the extensions entry.
There are several Mac based AIFF audio players available from sunsite.
You may quickly get a copy of
soundapp1.5.cpt.hqx
for the Macintosh.
Note that this copy may not be as recent as the previous reference however.
